about

Family Matters:

Much thanks to...
All the beautiful souls that inspired these songs, they are for you.

Mom and dad, for putting up with me never coming close to thanking you enough.

T, for teaching me more patience than I ever wish to have known.

A, for being the best listener a friend could ask for.

This album is a selection of the many songs I have written about topics regarding those people closest to home. I have come to learn so much about myself through their creation, and I hope the listeners may find as much enjoyment through listening as I do screaming on about the mad beauty of the world.

From my soul to yours,

Peace.

Track Name: Sweet Mary Ann
Mary Ann she was a sweet one
she set up south in Georgia
playing uke in a local college band
she'd strum with her thumb
and sing her voice numb
they were known all across that campus land

Sweet Mary Ann,
I hope someday I make you proud
if I wind up in a band

And Mary she once loved
an old gypsy sailor
together they made a Georgia peach
that peach grew up
to be the mother of three sons
that are lucky to have her in their reach

Sweet Mary Ann,
I hope someday I make you proud
if I wind up in a band

Mary, she used to smoke cigarettes
and she'd drink those long necks down
but she gave it all up for the love of her grandsons
and that's love that counts for a whole lot right now

She listens to fold music
she'll hum a little tune
sing la da dee da...

Sweet Mary Ann,
I hope someday I make you proud
if I wind up in a band
Track Name: Set Me Free
Won't you take me to the ocean
like you did when we were kids
I bet Pawpaw'd bomb a jellyfish again
won't you take me from the mainland
I could learn to surf again
and fall in love with a foreign language

You know it'd do me some good
to get out of this mind for a little while
So set me free

Won't you take me to the mountains
the ones that I grew up in
so I can breath home air again
maybe swing me back to Swengel
building forts with my best friend
climbing apple trees with my brothers

You know it'd do me some good
to get out of this mind for a little while
So set me free

'Cause where I've been has got me going crazy
where I've been has got me going insane

Won't you take me to the back porch
singing blues songs all night long
then we'll pass around a funky cigarette
get to spacing away one last time today

And set me free
Track Name: Whiteboard Figures (I Told You So)
She's got a white board
where she works out her problems
she twists up the numbers and changes the figures
until she figures it out

I've got some baggage
I can't seem to shake it
I guess moving on from the last perfect one
is harder than I thought

But I think she'd be good, so good, good for me
she just might be a simple love
a simple thing that I need
and when it all crumbles, when it all falls
my brain can say to my heart, "I told you so."

She loves her family
and that's real cool with me
but she never would take me won't come to know me
as one of them

And I've got a vision
she says it's intriguing
but she never will know it, can't understand it
like my real friends do

But I think she'd be good, so good, good for me
she just might be a simple love
a simple thing that I need
and when it all crumbles, when it all falls
my brain can say to my heart, "I told you so."
Track Name: Gotta Work With What You Got
I wasn't born with a six string, a six string in my hand
but I've learned to play, learned to play the best I can

I wasn't born with a happy, a happy song in my soul
but if I dig down deep I'm sure I can find one you know

You gotta work with what you got
you can't spend time on all the things you're not

I wasn't born with a silver, a silver spoon under my tongue
but if you need some help I'm sure I can find you some

You got your biscuits and gravy, you want your butter too
but that butter, she don't want you

You gotta work with what you got
you can't spend time on all the things you're not
Track Name: America the Brave
You best watch your step around here
'cause we've got guns strapped to our hips
we've got knives hidden in special places
we've got hate and we ain't afraid to use it

When I was just a little boy my mother cried, she cried all night
I wondered what was wrong but she couldn't explain
I was just a little boy heading into the first grade

But when I grew older I found out
her brother was riding his bike to his house
back from work just cruising and minding his own
when these angry drunk men shot him in the head

And they said,
"You best watch your step around here
'cause we've got guns strapped to our hips
we've got knives hidden in special places
we've got hate and we ain't afraid to use it."

And another million soldiers died this year
but we'll say, "who gives a damn we'll send another million more
to ratify this plan of bringing peace about from war."
but that will never work that will never pull through
even first grade me could have told all of you
America the brave founded on thievery

You best watch your step around here
'cause we've got guns strapped to our hips
we've got knives hidden in special places
we've got hate and we ain't afraid to use it

But this is just another hippie song
I feel I've been singing for way too long
But that don't mean I can't keep hoping on that one day we all might say,

"You are welcome to come around here
'cause we've got eyes full of regretful tears
we found ideas to challenge our minds
we've got love and we ain't afraid to use it"
Track Name: Anyway
There's a storm outside it's raging
but there's a calm hidden away
in a corner unseen and unshaken
and I'm afraid that's where she'll stay

I was there for your rebirth a new breath
at twenty-two it seemed so strange
for it was different to dread coming aftermath
a fear of what lies ahead

But right now thunders kicking and roaring
and it'll go on 'til we all fade away
and I can't promise you I'll hold on forever
but that's a promise I'll make anyway
that's a promise I'll make anyway
Track Name: Hey Hey, My My
We were sitting over coffee
at a place called, "Just love me"
I was thinking to my own self
how great that might be
just playing a small game of roosters and robots
I guess that's when I decided
I like you a whole lot

Hey hey, more of life should be this way
just passing on softly the small hours of the day
I sing my my, happiness can be so shy
so wouldn't it be nice
if she'd come around to stay

And we were talking about old dreams
with the sunrise and palm leaves
you had me hanging right there
by the skin of my teeth
you said, "I know I've never told you
but there should've been two
so just remember this one thing
I'll always love you."

Hey hey, more of life should be this way
just passing on sweetly the small hours of the day
I sing my my, happiness can be so shy
so wouldn't it be nice
if she'd come around to stay

I sing out like my father used to do
in the morning before he'd send me off to school
I sing out for my mother still today
just know the furthest we'll ever be
is just an ocean away

Hey hey, all of life should be this way
just passing on calmly the small hours of the day
I sing my my, happiness can be so shy
so wouldn't it be nice
if she'd come around to stay
Track Name: Clarity
Don't worry now
the change in shift will let us know
the night's here
I guess it won't hurt
to check again, make sure
nothing's changing, as it's all changing, it's all change

But could you step outside now?
we've got to make clean
what's left of him
Wait, did you hear that beep?
another step closer to death it seems
but you can't hold him

You can choose to see the light in it
or you can choose to see the darkness in it
oh we know it's in it

But calm now mother don't you shed another tear
push through a few more days
for to paradise we're near
and father won't you hold
onto this hope so dear
until the clarity is made clear

Don't let the stars guide you home
for they can deceive you
don't sit alone in your mind too long
with everyone around you
and if for some reason you find
you've a sparkle in you eye, cherish it

You can choose to see the light in it
or you can choose to see the darkness in it
oh we know it's in it

But calm now mother don't you shed another tear
push through a few more days
for to paradise we're near
and father won't you hold
onto this hope so dear
until the clarity is made clear

And I know nothing seems black or white
I know nothing seems day or night
it's all grey, it's all so grey

Calm now mother don't you shed another tear
push through a few more days
for to paradise we're near
and father won't you hold
onto this hope so dear
until the clarity is made clear
Track Name: Big Sail Boat
I'm gonna build a big sail boat
and all around the world I'll float
sometimes society makes me wanna choke
so I'm gonna build a big sail boat

I'm gonna paint it ocean green
so I can blend in with the sea
with the earth I'll live in harmony
just like people were made to be

I'm gonna be just like my Paw
with an islander in love I'll fall
my dad might not be too proud
but if I know him he'll come around

I've seen the dark I've seen the light
I've trembled on through lonesome nights
but on this boat I'll see it all
I'll find my peace I'll find my call

So come aboard the big sail boat
there's room enough for a few more folks
if this big cruel world makes you wanna choke
come aboard the big sail boat
